Egyptian Culture

For many people the Egyptian culture has not changed much over the centuries, and generally there is a fatalistic attitude that whatever will be will be. Sure while on an Egypt tour it is easy to see the evidence of modern commercialism, but the basic attitudes of people remain today pretty much the same as they have always been.

For a visitor to the country behaviour is important. As in many other countries there are some beggars and scams, and if you find yourself in this position it helps if you can avoid rude or aggressive behaviour in response to insistent demands or offers.

On the other hand, it is important not to suppose that anyone who approaches you expects money from you. Many tourists are overly defensive and consequently make little contact with the local people, who in fact can be remarkably friendly and helpful. So to get the most from your Nile cruise, behave towards the Egyptians as you would like them to behave towards you, remembering all the time that you are a guest in their country and they deserve respect for their customs and beliefs while you are there.

If you are taking a photograph of someone you should ask their permission first. This is particularly so in rural areas where your subject may otherwise become genuinely offended; while in the tourist areas some locals use it as an excuse to demand money. In particular be careful about photographing anything that could be a military security issue; for example vehicles and equipment, road or rail bridges, train stations, dams and so on.

If you are invited into a home, it is definitely normal to take your shoes off before entering. If you come to the house with your host, then watch what they do and follow suit; if you can't get your cue in this way, then it's Ok to ask. It is customary to take a gift, usually of something sweet like pastry or cake; but not wine or alcohol unless you are very sure of yourself on this one.

An important taboo to be aware of in Egypt is the different functions of the two hands. The left hand is used for things that are regarded as unclean; such as going to the toilet and taking off your shoes. In summary, the left hand is considered unhygienic, and it should not be used for eating or greeting. Maybe you can hold a dish in your left hand in order to take some food with your right hand, but you should not put the food into your mouth with your left hand; and never put your left hand into a bowl when eating communally. You should also avoid using your left hand to pass things to people or to accept what others pass to you.
